6 Essential Mistakes to Avoid When Packing for Move

As a Dubai’s top moving company, we often work with first timers and seasoned tenants. And over the years, we’ve found the pattern of mistakes in packing for move in each group.

Feeling stressed during the move is common!

But slight mismanagement in packing for the move can turn it into disappointment. Weak packing boxes, overpacking the carton, laziness in starting the process all indicate to a poorly planned moving journey.

So, we jotted down these packing mistakes to help you identify this pattern. Plus, this blog contains some useful moving tips for ensuring you have a smooth transition to your new home. Read on and discover what these packing mistakes are and how to avoid them.

Packing Mistakes to Avoid

There are different habits of tenants when it comes to packing for move!

Some have no prior packing experience where others simply don’t pay attention on buying the right material. Then, there are some who always mix up packing boxes and end up facing more exhaustion during unpacking.

Below are some common mistakes to avoid when you’re packing for move!

Mistake # 1: Start Packing Closer to Moving Date

One of the common patterns that we find in delayed moves are with tenants who start packing late!

When you have a lot of thoughts rambling around your brain, it’s highly likely to procrastinate. But this slow processing (or failing to stick by the plan) costs you later when the moving date arrives. The moving truck is outside your residence, but your packing is still not completed. This delay not only slows down your moving pace but disrupts your whole plan.

We suggest our clients to start the packing process at least a month before. And gradually cover each section so you don’t feel any burden as the moving date approaches.

Mistake # 2: Packing Unnecessary Items

Another mistake that tenants make while packing for move is that they pack literally everything!

You don’t necessarily carry every little item that you’ve bought during last year. And packing these unwanted items also adds up on your final moving invoice, too.

Look around, mark those unnecessary items, and get rid of them before you start packing everything. You may list them for resale, give them away in a charity, or simply discard them. Doing so would reduce your final packing boxes as well as shed off some more dirhams from the final invoice, too.

Mistake # 3: Using Low-Quality Packing Boxes

We’ve also worked with tenants who really don’t care about packing material’s quality!

Doing so not only results into torn packing boxes but also broken items during the transition. While you’re packing for move, make sure to use quality packing material only. Because you’re putting all your belongings into that box for the sake of safety. And if the element of safety is compromised from the very beginning, you’re only increasing your moving challenges.

Mistake # 4: Overloading the Packing Boxes

Stuffing single packing box with unlimited items is another packing mistake!

Sometimes tenants don’t know where to buy packing material and sometimes they try to reduce expenses. As a professional moving company in Dubai, we advise against this practice. Because overloading packing boxes puts them at the risk of breakage.

Instead of this, we advise our clients to keep each packing box to 22 kg weight only.

Mistake # 5: Skipping Packing Labels

When packing for move, don’t’ underestimate the value of labelling!

This is one common packing mistake that most tenants make. And this mistake costs them later when they start unpacking the boxes. Not only you’ll lose count of boxes but there are high chances of placing wrong ones in each room.

One of the moving tips that we offer to our clients is to properly label each box. Meaning you should write exact keyword on the box where it belongs in your new home.

Mistake # 6: Not Packing “Essentials” Box

When we take a moving job, we ask our clients to put aside key items that they’ll require the very next day. And this is one small packing mistake that most people make when preparing for move. You may feel frustrated when you’ll not find essential items the next day when you wake up after a hectic moving day.

As a responsible tenant, you must label a box as “Essentials”. From toiletries to chargers, and medications, all these items should go into this box.

Conclusion

These are some key mistakes that tenants make while packing for the move!

Make sure not to:

  • Start packing too late when your moving date is in 1 week or less
  • Pack unwanted items to carry in your new home
  • Use weak, low quality packing material for the move
  • Overpack a packing box than its actual capacity
  • Skip labelling each box during the packing process
  • Miss having an “Essentials” packing box
